I’ve been on both sides. Only a series of strange and tough life events that I’ll tell you about shortly has helped me to clearly see the difference.
And this led to a mighty question…Can I teach healthful obsession? Now there’s a worthy challenge!
(And I mean both in that it is healthfully done…and focused on bringing you greater health.)
I’ve often said that if I could do it, so can you. I’ve now realized the qualifier for that statement. You can do it too…but only if you become obsessed!

How I Transformed from a 98 lb. Weakling to World Renown Strongman
I wasn’t gifted with strong genetics. I was a pipe cleaner of a child. While I had no major health issues, it seemed I was sick with colds more often than not.
I ate the Standard American Diet, full of hot pockets, name brand cereals with added spoonfuls of sugar and drank sodas every day. I didn’t eat vegetables... period.
Here’s a acne-faced photo of me year. As you might guess by the jersey, I played football. But you wouldn’t know that from looking at me! I was the proverbial 98 lb. weakling. Literally, I didn’t weigh 100 lbs. my Freshman year. I was not obsessed. (Well, maybe with video games…)
I was bullied hard enough that I had a repressed memory I only just rediscovered (though that’s a story for another time.)
That period was a dark one. I had zero friends at the time. Zero. I was isolated and alone.
It wasn’t until later, when I turned 18 that my obsession truly began.
The Health and Fitness Obsession Begins…
While I tried for years to lift weights at a gym and for football, I honestly got pretty much no where. It wasn’t until a bit later when I got started with bodyweight training with Matt Furey.
Five years later, I was the Combat Conditioning Athlete of the Year. This apexed with doing a ten-minute wrestler’s bridge, 250 Hindu pushups and 1000 Hindu squats in non-stop sets in about one hour’s time.
Training led to an interest in health and nutrition. I dropped my childish ways as I began to understand what real food was. I focused on supercharging my recovery from workouts, I got into superfoods and herbs. The wide-world of health opened before me.
From bodyweight training, I got into kettlebells. Today I’m recognized as one of the best kettlebell jugglers in the USA. I’ve snatched a 106 lb. kettlebell 91 times in 10 minutes. When I started it took me months to work up to snatching that once.
I got into grip sport and feats of strength like the oldtime strongman. I went on to pull an 8,800 lb. fire truck by my hair. I’ve bent nails with my hands, torn decks of cards not just in half but into quarters, and so much more.
Along the way I’ve written THE book on mental training for strength sports and athletes. I’ve developed systems for how to listen to your body to make greater progress and heal injuries. I’ve helped countless people become stronger, healthier and move better.
And all of that literally only scratches the surface.
Obsession was the key that unlocked those doors. For me, I discovered that I could pull myself out of that bit of despair, take charge of my life and change for the better.

How 2020 Beat Me Up and Spit Me Out. Sadly, How I LOST My Obsession...
The years of 2020-2022 were brutally hard on me. In addition, to the worldly events that everyone had to deal with…
In August 2020, my house burned down in one of the California wildfires.
I lost my gym, which you can see the remnants of here. The power rack the only thing left standing, though warped and damaged. My home gym was the foundation, the center of my obsession.
And as ridiculous as it sounds, that did not even come close to the worst part of 2020, which happened a few short months later.
Starting in November, my wife went through a horrendous series of health challenges. It started with not sleeping 12 days straight. It got crazy! There were seizures. At times, it honestly seemed like possession. WTF was going on?
False rock bottom, after false rock bottom, after false rock bottom. I cannot properly convey in a short amount of space the devastation of such events, nor does she want me to share some of the private details.
Only a year later, after trying so much did we get the diagnosis of Lyme disease.
And we’re still not out of it completely. The messed up thing is how after things were getting so much better for over a year…then just recently in November 2022 was the worst it’s ever been.
Through much of this time, I’ve had to act mostly as a single parent taking care of both my wife and my daughter.
Add to this that in these three years my family has moved across states three times. Stressful times.
Out of the Dark, Into the Light. Regaining a Healthier and Even Stronger Obsession…
My health and fitness skated along on good habits thankfully, but truth be told my old obsession died.
And it was necessary that it did. You see it was built on a shaky foundation. This calcination of my life was essential to break down the emotional armor of repression I’d built. The Bare Bones Bodyweight Training Program
This requires absolutely zero equipment. (There are a few spots where common items like a chair may be used, but nothing besides the floor and your body is necessary.)
It utilizes three exercises, ones you’re probably already familiar with…
There are regressions and progressions with all these from total newbie to elite athlete for each of these.
Once again, it is quick workouts, typically ten to fifteen minutes, that build not just strength, but endurance, and even flexibility too.

The trick to any training program is that it must be progressive.
